Lagos Court Sentences Danish Man To Death For Killing His Nigerian Wife, Daughter

A Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, (TBS), has sentenced Peter Nielsen, a 54-year-old Denmark national, to death by hanging for killing his Nigerian wife, Zainab and three-year-old daughter Petra.

Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile, gave the verdict, after finding Nielsen guilty of the offence of murder.

Nielsen was convicted on Friday, May 20, 2022, on two counts of murder the Lagos State government brought against him.

At his arraignment on June 13, 2018, Nielsen pleaded not guilty to the two counts of murder following which trial commenced.

The Lagos State government accused him of smothering Zainab and Petra to death at 3.45 am. at No. 4, Flat 17, Bella Vista Tower, Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos State, an offence contrary to Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

When the trial commenced the prosecution called nine witnesses and closed their case on September 20, 2019. The defence opened its case and also called nine witnesses with the defendant being the 9th witness.

The court particularly held that Zainab’s sister, Pepe, was a witness of truth.

She had testified about a fight she witnessed between the couple in 2017, adding that the defendant had threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone about what she saw.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile held that Nielsen smothered Zainab Nielsen and Petra Nielsen to death.

She said, “He was the one that killed Zainab, Peter Nielsen was the one that killed Petra Nielsen. Zainab had already predicted her death when she told their driver that this man will kill me. She told her stepfather, Chris Madaki when she went to Abuja that this man will kill me”.

“This is one of the cases of domestic violence. The DNA analysis of nail scraping brought out the assailant of Zainab. Zainab tried so much to defend herself. The evidence shows that Peter Nielsen killed his wife and daughter. There is evidence before the court that there is a fight between the defendant and his wife,” the judge held.
